A hoodie isn’t just a hoodie — especially in winter. When the temperature drops, your regular throw-on won’t cut it. You need something built different — heavier, tougher, and made to last. So, what actually makes a hoodie winter ready? Three things: fit, GSM, and fabric.
Fit:
First thing’s first — stop buying slim-fit hoodies. They’re not doing you any favours. A boxy, slightly oversized fit is where it’s at for both comfort and style. You want room to layer underneath, and a structured drape that doesn’t cling. The right fit makes your hoodie look intentional — not like you raided your little brother’s wardrobe. Boxy silhouettes also sit better under outerwear, giving you that clean, heavyweight streetwear look instead of a crumpled mess.
GSM (Grams per Square Metre):
This is where most people get caught out. GSM measures how heavy and dense the fabric is — and it’s everything when it comes to quality. Anything under 350GSM is lightweight and better for summer. For winter? Trash. You want at least 500GSM — proper heavyweight cotton that keeps its shape, traps heat, and feels premium. A good 500GSM hoodie doesn’t just keep you warm; it ages better the more you wear it.
Fabric:
Let’s be blunt — poly-cotton hoodies are rubbish. They might feel soft at first, but after one wash they lose shape, fade, and pill. Total waste of money. If you actually care about longevity, you want 100% cotton — ideally brushed on the inside for comfort. Cotton holds structure, breathes better, and looks cleaner. It’s heavier, sure, but that’s exactly why it’s perfect for winter.
A proper winter-ready hoodie combines all three: a boxy fit, 500GSM weight, and 100% cotton fabric. It’s the kind of piece that doesn’t shrink, doesn’t twist, and only gets better with wear. Skip the fast-fashion fleece blends — invest once, wear it for years. That’s how real streetwear’s built.
